Author: Patricia Hawke

Who cares about comparing schools? After all, the experts are constantly advising parents NOT to compare their children to each other, their cousins, friends, and neighbors. It can damage their self-esteem, causing the little darlings to feel like they don’t measure up to their parents’ expectations. However, comparing secondary schools for High school rankings is one situation in which kids – students – must be compared to their peers.

High school rankings are one of the main ways that experts (think teachers, administrators and school board members), community members (business leaders, parents, taxpayers), and government leaders (mayors, governors, local and state senators and representatives) determine how well a school is doing compared to its counterparts. Looking at the High school rankings gives a lot of valuable information to all of these groups.

For example, High school rankings may provide data on test scores. Knowing how different students have scored on standardized tests as compared to other students who have taken the same or at least similar tests is important. It shows how much test-based knowledge the students have acquired and retained. The High school rankings make accessing this complex information easy.

Comparing schools on the curriculum level is another way to use High school rankings for gen interest. Looking at how often a school updates its curriculum to reflect changing trends in education and updates to texts and materials will also provide perspective on what the kids are studying in preparation for the tests they take.

High school rankings may also give information on the socioeconomic levels of the students attending the high schools that are part of the High school rankings for gen interest. If a school is composed mostly of students in a middle- to high-socioeconomic background, there’s a good chance that more of those students will excel as compared to their peers who have a low-socioeconomic background. In addition, information found in High school rankings can also tell us what kind of effort schools that serve the lower end of the socioeconomic scale are putting forth.

Looking at High school rankings can give Board of Education officials insight into which schools should receive accolades for their hard work, and which schools might need more attention. While all schools deserve attention and support from their local and state education officials, there are some that need extra attention to help them raise their game. Using information gleaned from High school rankings is an easy and quick way for said officials, as well as private organizations or individual donors, to determine which schools need an extra boost.

Analyzing High school rankings over a period of years will also show how much improvement individual schools or districts have made, and how the extra attention given to struggling schools, as identified by the High school rankings For Gen Interest, has helped.

Author: Patricia Hawke

Houston Schools families who have children who are identified as “gifted” or “talented” academically face unique problems. The biggest one is ensuring that the child in question is being adequately challenged, without suffering burn-out. “I’m bored” is one of those phrases that all parents hate hearing. I mean really hate. It’s frustrating for a parent to be relied upon for entertaining and keeping the child busy, especially when that child is of school-age. By the time they are in 2nd or 3rd grade, kids should be able to find things to entertain and keep themselves occupied. The bright ones are no exception, and may be the ones doing the most complaining. Too often, kids who aren’t being challenged in school get themselves into trouble. Some see no point in even attending classes, are truant, or get into things they shouldn’t. Keeping these Houston Public Schools kids busy and challenged is the best way to ensure that none of the situations mentioned above occur.

Houston Schools are working to make their centers of learning ones where the gifted and talented are continually challenged with unique magnet programs and rigorous standards.

Starting in the ’07-’08 school year, students who are gifted or academically talented will all attend magnet schools called Vanguard Schools. Students are identified for placement in a Vanguard School by looking at various indicators and traits. The “identification matrix” used by Houston Schools includes test scores from the Stanford/Aprenza exam and the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test. Report-card points and teacher recommendations are also considered.

Students who have limited English proficiency, are enrolled in special education, or qualify as having low socioeconomic status are also considered for placement in one of these special Houston Schools. These Houston Schools are continuously monitored to help ensure that high-quality and more-rigorous instruction is provided in all classrooms. These Houston Schools students are expected to score above grade-level on the Stanford test. In addition, any of these Houston Schools high-school students who are enrolled in a Vanguard School are required to take a minimum of two advanced-academic courses (ex: Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or dual-credit).

Having programs like the Vanguard Schools help make Houston Schools a desirable place to be and learn. Most kids who fall into the “Gifted and Talented” category want to be challenged and learn more. However, these kids look at the world a little differently than most, and require a unique program that will serve their needs. Houston Schools have made sure to identify these students and provide them with excellent places that they can attend to make the most of their public Houston Schools education.

Sounds like a good place to go to school!

Author: Patricia Hawke

When I was in high school, I attended the only high school our town had. A one-high school town, our school was home to every 14-18 year old in residence. My senior year, there were about 250 of us graduating. I thought that was a lot; but I still at least knew everyone’s name, even if I wasn’t friends with them all. Looking back, our school wasn’t that big compared to some; the name of every person in my graduating class fit on the back of the Prom T-shirt! I never thought of my school as small; it seemed big to my small-town eyes. With approximately 1,000 students, our campus had 4 classroom wings (a 5th one was added in my junior year), a music building, a gym, library, office, cafeteria, weight room, tennis courts, football fields, and baseball diamonds. We even had a barn, for the FFA kids (Future Farmers of America) and their livestock. This was my world, and one which I quite honestly wanted to get out of as soon as possible. While the size of our school was really on the small side, it was big to us; but I guess it’s all relative to our own experiences.

These days (I only graduated about 15 years ago, thank you very much), Indianapolis Schools have grown. Even my old high school has grown so much that I barely recognize it. (It’s still the only high school in town!) In fact, high schools are huge! With enrollments at Indiana and Indianapolis Schools at low of around 1,200 students and as high as 2,000 or more, schools are full to bursting. Indianapolis Public Schools administrators, teachers, and even Indianapolis Schools parents are trying hard to improve the education given to high school students. And small schools, such as the ones present in Indianapolis Schools, are meeting this need.

In Indianapolis Schools, school systems are trying very hard to personalize their students’ education, through the use of “Small Schools”. A small school is typically located on a regular Indianapolis Schools campus and shares common areas with other small schools housed on the same location. Cafeteria, gymnasiums, and media centers are used by all students. One Indianapolis Schools campus may house up to four or even five different small schools. These Indianapolis Schools offer a more intimate learning environment that is better able to address the needs of students, staff and parents. Each of these smaller Indianapolis Schools has an enrollment of no more than 400 students. They all offer both core classes (English, math, social studies and science) as well as electives. The needs of all students – special education as well as general education – are addressed. The purpose of these small schools within Indianapolis Schools is to improve students’ academic, social and behavioral performance, to reduce the dropout rate, and to connect students in a more personal way with the Indianapolis Schools they are attending.

Indianapolis Schools that are using the small school models are showing some really good results. I guess my high school knew what it was doing after all.

Author: Patricia Hawke

Every city in every state in this nation has a homeless population. These are people who are “down on their luck”. They may have suffered a series of financial disasters and have been driven from their homes because they simply couldn’t pay the bills. They may suffer from a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or clinical depression and are unable to care for themselves financially, as well as physically. It is beyond them to provide themselves with adequate food or shelter.

Sadly, many families suffer the first fate – mounting bills force them out of their homes. Many live in their cars, but still more have to depend on charitable organizations to help them meet the needs of their families. Sometimes, the judicial system gets involved, and families are split up; kids are placed in foster care in the hopes that they will get the care they need.

Kansas City Schools officials recognized a unique need for the children of a homeless family – they still need an education. However, with the many obstacles present for a homeless child and his or her family, getting this education is not always possible.

The State of Missouri requires every school district to coordinate homeless student services, including the district which serves Kansas City Public Schools. Homeless Student Services assures that homeless Kansas City Schools students are provided the same free public education as is provided to other children and youth. Kansas City Schools’ services for over 1,000 homeless students include:

Assistance with immediate enrollment of homeless Kansas City Schools

children and youth

Provide assistance with obtaining academic and medical records

Provide/arrange school transportation to Kansas City Schools of choice

Disseminate public notice of educational rights of homeless children and youth

Arrange special tutoring & education services for students outside the school day

Assist families in obtaining medical insurance and services

Coordinate Kansas City Schools related activities with homeless shelters and agencies

What most impresses me is that not only have Kansas City Schools recognized the needs of these very unique Kansas City Schools students, they are doing all they can to ensure they get the education they need, deserve, and are entitled to. One might say that of all students, these are the ones who need a good Kansas City Schools education the most. Graduating from high school is the only way to get into college, and really the only way to move up in the world, even when working a “blue collar” job. Helping these Kansas City Schools kids be successful in school will not only help them ensure a better future than if they didn’t attend school, but will help them build the confidence and self-esteem they need to continue succeeding.

That’s definitely one of the most admirable reasons out there for offering a public education to these deserving Kansas City Schools students.

Author: Patricia Hawke

Without students, there are no schools. Of course, amassing students without teachers doesn’t make a school either. This is the problem that Las Vegas Schools are currently facing. In fact, it is a problem they have had for a very long time. Las Vegas Schools have made a public plea. The Las Vegas Schools need 1,163 teachers to fill vacancies before the upcoming school year, beginning in August 2007. That is almost twice the number the district needed last year. If teachers aren’t hired to fill the gap, the district serving Las Vegas Schools will not have many options.

Las Vegas Schools will have to increase class size, meaning some teachers would have to teach second classes in addition to their normal work load. This would also take away valuable time needed for lesson planning.

The school district will have to find more teachers by using creative recruiting techniques. The number of applications is down by a third from last year, and Las Vegas Schools have almost twice the number of teaching positions still to fill.

The superintendent of Las Vegas Schools says hiring and keeping quality teachers are at the root of all of his educational initiatives. He claims to have done everything he can to attract teachers- even partnering with national programs. Teams of principals from several Las Vegas Schools are visiting cities that are downsizing their teaching staff. The hope is that the teams will get some ideas and valuable suggestions on how exactly the Las Vegas Schools district should go about the downsizing.

Many teachers choose other school systems in which to teach in part because of the $33,000 starting salary. Las Vegas Schools leaders want it to be at $40,000 to compete with other school districts in the country. The Las Vegas Schools superintendent would like lawmakers to raise taxes to increase teacher salaries.

No teacher worth their salt is in this profession for the money. Corny as it sounds, teachers (most of them at any rate) are teachers because they want to make a difference in a child’s life. Many have become teachers because they have been inspired by their own teachers, or want to be a part of the improvement of public education in this country. It is indeed incredibly rewarding to see the lights go on in a child’s eyes when he or she has grasped a difficult concept; it makes it all worthwhile. Teachers are teachers because they want to teach, end of discussion. However, they do have to live, eat, and sleep in safe and warm homes. Unfortunately, this costs money, and money is what Las Vegas Schools teachers need more of. The district has no hope of recruiting and retaining quality educators without ensuring, in part, a good salary to live on.

Hopefully, the leaders of Las Vegas Schools will take this need to heart and do everything they can to make their goals in regards to recruiting and retaining teachers a reality.

Author: Patricia Hawke

Many, many people live in Los Angeles. As of the latest census there were an estimated 9,948,081 people living there. Los Angeles covers a land area of 4,061 square miles, with 2,344 persons occupying each of those areas. It goes without saying that this is a lot of people! Several of these residents have children; 27.6% of these residents are persons from 5 years old to 18 years old. That’s a lot of kids…over 710,000 to be exact. These students attend one of the many Los Angeles Schools, where they are served by the Los Angeles Schools 74,000 district employees.

With so many “clients” to serve, Los Angeles Schools need lots of help, and plenty of it comes from grants, state funding, and donations from private organizations. While money won’t solve all the issues, it is indeed an important component in the quest to improve the education provided by Los Angeles Public Schools.

For example, a new project, entitled “Ed in ‘08” has started. Named “Strong American Schools” and partly funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, “Ed in ‘08” has a platform based on higher standards, more effective teaching, and extra attention to Los Angeles Schools students who need it. The campaign hopes to inspire voters to force presidential candidates from both parties to make education the top priority and to take up its agenda. Higher standards for students means that the Los Angeles Schools will turn out students who are even more prepared to enter college or the workforce than the previous generation of students.

More effective Los Angeles Schools teachers are those who have attended inservice training, and have learned about “best teaching practices”; a national philosophy of teaching that attempts to give all students the attention they need and deserve in a safe, effective learning environment. Giving extra attention to students in need, such as those who have fallen behind in school is the 3rd goal of the project. Los Angeles Schools want all their students to succeed; but some students need more help reaching this goal than others. More teachers, innovative curriculum, and special programs are necessary to help these students reach their potential.

In a city that is home to Hollywood, one would expect there to be an excellent Arts program. The school system serving Los Angeles Schools works diligently to make this happen. In fact, recent and highly significant state allocations to the Visual and Performing Arts education have been made. Nearly $47 million will go to the Los Angeles Schools, and is earmarked for dance, music, theatre, and visual arts instruction. Los Angeles Schools have a great interest in graduating students who are skilled in these areas; why not use hometown talent to drive the movie business?

Author: Patricia Hawke

Did you ever need a little extra help with a school subject? At some point or another, almost all of us have. Whether it’s been something like handwriting or learning letters to diagramming a sentence or geometry, we’ve all had times when we’ve struggled in school. (This does not mean the struggle we had staying awake in early morning classes!) While classroom teachers are doing everything they can to help their students and facilitate learning, they can’t do it all. They need help. The Memphis Schools school board leaders struggled with this issue. Here’s one way they’re trying to help these struggling Memphis Schools students (and their teachers).

The Memphis Schools system has created a department to handle the recruitment and organization of community members who are willing and able to donate time and effort mentoring students. As stated on the Memphis City Schools website, “helping one child learn helps us all. Children must master basic reading and mathematics skills to succeed in life, and all of them can. But some need a little extra help and a little extra time. Some of them need you.”

Memphis Schools are calling on the entire community to help tutor students, and will give volunteers all the training and materials needed to do the job. Adds the Memphis Schools website, “All you have to invest is a little time. And when this investment grows, everybody profits. It’s time we stopped asking, “Why doesn’t somebody do something?” Somebody can. You. Join Our children – Our Future, the new Memphis City schools volunteer tutor training program.” It is a wonderful initiative that is being undertaken by the Memphis Schools system, and one to be copied by other school systems throughout Tennessee and the nation.

When participating in the program serving students attending Memphis Schools, volunteer tutors work with K-6 students for 30 minutes once or twice a week, and 45 minutes once a week for those in 7th – 12th grades. Times for tutoring sessions will be individualized for all Memphis Schools, and will include times before, during, and after the school day. Individual schedules of volunteers will be considered when scheduling tutoring sessions.

Volunteers at any of the Memphis Schools will receive approximately 2 ½ -3 hours of training, as well as all materials they might require when working with their student. Tutors can pick the age of the child they work with, as well as what subject (either Reading or Math) they want to help in. Volunteer tutors must have a high school diploma, and have a strong concept of algebraic concepts if tutoring in higher math. In addition, all volunteers must agree to a background check, in order to ensure the safety of all Memphis Schools students.

Author: Patricia Hawke

Being a parent of a school aged child has never been an easy task. And with all the choices facing young people these days, the job is getting even harder. But a new program run by Miami Schools is trying to alleviate some of the burden on parents with a number of programs designed to keep parents informed on some of the most important issues facing young people in the Miami Schools.

Parent Academy in Miami Schools

The Miami-Dade Public County School system runs a year-round “Academy” to inform and assist the parents of students in Miami Schools and other schools in the county. There is no formal campus. Instead classes and courses are held in businesses, libraries, on-line, and in some public Miami Schools. Classes are informal in nature, but don’t let that fool you. Parents learn quite a bit while still having a lot of fun. And best of all, Miami Dade Public Schools doesn’t charge a fee of any kind.

The classes hosted by the Academy of Miami Schools vary greatly. For instance, many parents have taken a financial management course offered in 2007. This class helps parents organize their finances and deal head-on with issues like credit cards. It also provides a forum for parents to discuss all of the expenses associated with sending a child or children to Miami Schools. And there are a lot.

One popular class is child discipline. Meeting with other parents is a great way to just chat about strategies that have worked (and some that haven’t) when dealing with children. And we all know what an issue school discipline has been in Miami Schools in the last few years. Being able to deal with issues at home may take some of the burden off the already over-worked teachers.

But the Parent Academy of Miami Schools is not all work and no play. In fact they just hosted a big family fun day. There was story-telling and face-painting, a lot of water games, and plenty of great food. Similar activities are hosted all the time on a smaller scale. If you check the calendar found on the Miami Schools web site, you will find a few story days hosted by Barnes and Noble coming up. And it’s just about time for the Back to School Resource Fair.

Miami Schools have a myriad problems and I’m not saying that these can be resolved by attending a few classes. But we if parents resolve to stay involved in our children’s lives and guide them through all of the obstacles facing them, we can make a change for the better. I’m just glad that the people at Miami Schools thought enough of parental influence on our children and other young people to give us a voice in their futures.

Author: Patricia Hawke

Schools come up with action plans every day. In fact, the Milwaukee Schools recently announced the adoption of an action plan that is designed to make its students competitive with some of the best schools in the country. The plan, designated “Working Together, Achieving More,” was adopted by the board of Milwaukee Schools in July 2007. But gauging whether a plan means real change, or just a good press release isn’t always easy. The Milwaukee Public Schools plan is meant to be acted on immediately, but it claims to provide for years of improvement. In it the school board lays out benchmarks for success for the years 2007 through 2012.

Entire Community Bands Together to Improve Milwaukee Schools

The committee that researched and designed this new plan was not made up of a bunch of academics with little experience in the classroom or the “real world.” In fact, input was asked for from many different areas. Educators, administrators, researchers, business leaders, families and many others worked together to come up with a plan designed to put Milwaukee Schools on the map. I’d say that this is a point in their favor.

Milwaukee Schools Dedicated to Doing “Whatever it Takes.”

The new plan, “Working Together, Achieving More” takes some direction from No Child Left Behind and similar acts that are aimed at reaching every student. The plan’s mission statement is that all students of Milwaukee Schools will achieve success in higher education and career, and more importantly will become responsible citizens of Milwaukee and the world at large. Mission statements are always well intended. It’s accomplishing the mission that’s the hard part.

In order to become a high performing urban school, Milwaukee Schools has set certain goals for itself. Some of these include:

1. Meeting or exceeding the standards set by the state. This would be calculated by scores on state exams and by certain benchmarks in reading and math.

2. Becoming real communities of learning and building upon the idea of PLC or Professional Learning Communities. This allows educators planned time to work together within disciplines and across disciplines in addition to work outside of the school with community members and leaders.

3. Continued improvement and professional development for ALL staff of Milwaukee Schools, not just teachers. Administrators and bus drivers would be held to certain standards of improvement as well.

4. Being accountable for any shortcomings. This would include action plans for addressing those weak points. This is where the ideas of NCLB come in.

5. Being supportive of families. This includes all staff of any particular school and the district as a whole. This is designed to make families feel like a welcome and important part of the public schools.

If Milwaukee Schools really want to be competitive they have a long way to go. Any urban school district faces a lot of problems from overcrowding to under-funding to drugs to disinterested parents to…By committing to a long-term action plan, Milwaukee Schools has taken an important step. If they truly put their money where their mouth is, this district might achieve its ultimate goal: to make Milwaukee Schools the first choice of every parent.
